According to an EU official who spoke to European Pravda on the condition of anonymity, at an extraordinary European Council meeting, EU member states will discuss the potential deployment of troops in Ukraine.

An extraordinary meeting will take place on March 6 in Brussels, where European leaders will start shaping a framework for EU security guarantees for Ukraine, set to take effect following the potential end of the war or the onset of a truce.

The concept will also explore the potential deployment of a European military contingent on Ukrainian soil.

“At this European Council meeting, substantial progress will be made on EU security guarantees for Ukraine, which will include discussions on the potential deployment of military missions within the country,” the EU official shared.

He mentioned that, to date, “there has been no formal debate on this matter,” with only a few EU countries publicly stating their positions on sending troops to Ukraine under the security guarantees.

“However, it’s possible that more nations will voice their support for this initiative at the summit,” the European official added.

However, he emphasized that a definitive decision on deploying EU troops to Ukraine cannot be made until the framework for a peaceful settlement is clearer.

“It’s too early to discuss specific decisions. There has been no ceasefire yet, and no peace agreement has been signed. The political landscape is continuously evolving,” the official stated.

As the first element of security guarantees for Ukraine, the EU considers “providing support to the armed forces of Ukraine, strengthening the Ukrainian army so that in case of new aggression they can defend themselves.”

The European official noted that the latter statement is in the most recent version of the draft conclusions of the European Council summit on January 6.

As previously reported, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing Europe’s military capabilities while providing continued support to Ukraine. Europe has the potential to mobilize up to €800 billion to bolster its defense capabilities.
