Leaders of European countries have issued a joint statement reaffirming the inviolability of Denmark’s sovereignty and the status of Greenland as its autonomous territory.

The document was posted on official government resources.

The statement was signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Christian Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The text emphasizes that security in the Arctic region remains a key priority for Europe and is crucial for international and transatlantic stability.

NATO has already officially designated the Arctic as a region of strategic importance, and European allies are stepping up their military and political presence in the region.

It is noted that a number of Allies have increased their presence, activity and investment to ensure Arctic security and deter potential threats, while the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Greenland, remains a full-fledged member of NATO.

The European leaders emphasized that security in the Arctic can only be ensured on a collective basis – in close cooperation with NATO allies, in particular the United States, with strict adherence to the principles of the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.

The statement also emphasizes the role of the United States as a key partner in these efforts, as a NATO ally and a party to the 1951 Copenhagen-Washington defense agreement.

The statement also emphasizes that decisions about the future of Greenland belong to its people, and that any issues related to the status of Denmark and Greenland can be decided exclusively by Denmark and Greenland itself.

US interests in Greenland

Recently, statements by US politicians have intensified about the need to transfer control of Greenland from Denmark to the United States due to security needs.

In December 2024 , US President Donald Trump stated that the United States’ possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.

He had previously expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was rejected.

In 2025, Trump was also told that the island was not for sale and would not be, but that Denmark could cooperate more with the United States.

On March 30, the new Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Fredrik Nielsen, stated for certain that the United States would not get the island. According to him, “it was yesterday, it is today and it will be in the future.”
