On Friday evening, several European airports experienced a large-scale disruption due to a cyberattack. The check-in and boarding systems were most affected, causing delays and flight cancellations.
This was reported by the German newspaper Spiegel, citing airport representatives. The digital service provider, which serves a number of hubs, is working to fix the problem as soon as possible.
The biggest difficulties arose at the Brussels Airport, where check-in systems were completely out of order. Passengers were served manually, which caused significant delays.
London Heathrow also reported technical failures, although it was not officially confirmed that this was the result of a cyberattack.
Berlin had to temporarily shut down some of the systems connected to the same vendor as in Brussels. This affected the speed of passenger service.
The Münster/Osnabrück Airport was also affected, but they quickly separated their own systems from the attacked service, which helped avoid serious consequences.
Possible sources of the attack include foreign hackers, in particular from Russia, which regularly carries out cyberattacks on infrastructure in Europe and Ukraine.
