Next week, the European Union plans to hold talks among defense ministers about establishing a “drone wall” along its eastern border.
Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defence and Space, announced the meeting, according to Reuters.
He shared that he would host a video conference with defense ministers from Eastern European countries as well as a representative from Ukraine, which could offer valuable insights from its experience in the large-scale war with Russia.
“I just came back from Kyiv two days ago and we were talking both with the government and also with industry,” said Kubilius, a former prime minister of Lithuania who was appointed the EU’s first-ever defence commissioner last year.
The European Commissioner also notes that discussions about the “drone wall” are still at an early stage.
He envisions this project as a combination of sensors, various types of weaponry, and electronic warfare (EW) systems that will detect and neutralize approaching drones.
The need to create a ‘drone wall’ was recently declared by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. This happened just a few hours after Poland scrambled fighter jets to shoot down Russian drones that had entered its airspace.
