The European Parliament refused to approve a decision on funding for the EU Council until the EU countries provide Ukraine with additional Patriot air defense systems.
ArmiyaInform reported on this.
The proposal was made by MEP from the Renew faction, former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt.
His proposal was supported by 515 MEPs, with 62 against it.
“All of you have seen in recent weeks the Russian bombing of Ukrainian cities, hospitals, and residential buildings. At the same time, the EU Council is not able to make a decision and send a certain number of anti-missile systems to Ukraine,” Guy Verhofstadt said.
He emphasized that there are 100 Patriot systems in Europe, and Ukraine is asking for only seven of them.
“The Parliament refuses to fulfill the Council’s budget until the EU Council decides to support Ukraine with additional Patriot missile defense systems,” the MEP wrote in his X.
Militarnyi previously reported that Germany would look for Patriot systems for Ukraine around the world.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba shared that following the discussion, Germany, as the leader of the Air Defense Coalition, would look for Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine not only within NATO but also around the world.
U.S. Patriot air defense systems outside of NATO are in service in Israel, Jordan, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Taiwan.
As previously reported, the Ukrainian military ordered dummy versions of the American Patriot air defense system from the local manufacturer.
The manufacturer of mock-ups told The Daily Telegraph that one mock-up will cost about $10,000.
Such dummies are needed for Russian missiles to be diverted to destroy false targets.
