Estonia Deploys New GM400 Alpha Radar System Near Russia

Estonia has deployed a new GM400 Alpha radar station to strengthen its airspace monitoring capabilities.

The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (RKIK) reported this and released a photo.

The French company Thales produced the radar under an earlier signed contract.

The GM400 Alpha will operate at the new Viru radar site, improve detection capabilities, particularly in northeastern Estonia, and be fully integrated into NATO’s air-defence system.

The establishment of this site is an important step toward enhancing Estonia’s airspace surveillance capabilities, benefiting Estonia and the security of its allies amid growing security threats from Russia.

The contract for the supply of two GM400 Alpha radars was signed in June 2023 between RKIK and the company.

GM400 Alpha

Radars of the GM400 Alpha family are designed for long-range detection of aerial objects, using advanced data processing methods to enhance system performance.

These radars can simultaneously detect and track low-flying drones and high-altitude threats at distances of more than 500 kilometers. They are available in both stationary and mobile variants.
