Estonia is reinforcing the bridge over the Narva River, which links the Estonian city of Narva with Russia’s Ivangorod.
The local media outlet ERR reports that large metal gates have been installed on the Estonian side of the bridge. Preparations are also underway to install retractable metal barriers that could completely block traffic in both directions if needed.
Currently, the gates block only the car lane. The pedestrian walkway remains open, but separate gates for foot traffic are expected to be installed soon.
All work on the Estonian side is expected to be completed by the end of September. Concrete anti-tank obstacles, known as “dragon’s teeth”, and barbed wire have also been placed on the bridge.
In late June, Estonia began constructing anti-tank ditches along parts of its border with Russia — the first tangible phase of a broader defense initiative.
One such ditch is already being excavated at a test site between the border fence and monitoring posts. It will form a key element of the future defensive line.
By the end of 2025, Estonia plans to build 28 bunkers and several storage facilities for equipment and ammunition.
According to the State Defence Investment Centre, €4.4 million has been earmarked in the 2025 state budget for border defense infrastructure.
The ditches are being constructed in line with a needs assessment by the Estonian Defence Forces. In peacetime, they will function as part of the border infrastructure, enhancing the country’s border security.
In addition, the Estonian Defence Forces plan to establish a military base in Narva, where more than 200 Estonian servicemembers will be stationed.
The base is also expected to host units from NATO allies, highlighting Narva’s strategic role on the eastern flank of the Alliance.
