Deceased American financier Jeffrey Epstein worked with Russian intelligence to collect compromising material on influential politicians and business figures, and also planned a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Daily Mail reported.
The newspaper cited intelligence sources as saying Epstein used his network and private parties to obtain confidential information that could later be passed to Russian intelligence services.
According to the report, Epstein was used by intelligence services as part of a so‑called “honey trap” operation to gather sensitive information. The material was then used for blackmail. Such operations involve creating situations in which a target enters into intimate contact with an operative, with conversations and actions secretly recorded.
The intelligence services later use the material obtained to exert pressure on the target.
The list of potential targets allegedly included members of the political elite in the United States and Europe. The report also says the information points to Epstein’s close ties with Robert Maxwell, who it claims worked for Russian intelligence from the 1970s and helped facilitate the emigration of Soviet Jews to Israel with the involvement of Israel’s Mossad intelligence service.
The newspaper also says U.S. intelligence agencies believe Epstein had long-standing ties to Russian organized crime, citing references to his ability to transport large numbers of women from Russia by plane.
The documents cited describe another episode. In an email dated September 11, 2011, an unidentified employee discussed with Epstein a possible “meeting with Putin” during a planned trip to Russia.
The message said: “I spoke with Igor. He said: last time in Palm Beach you mentioned meeting Putin on September 16. So he can book a ticket to Russia to come to you in a few days.”
The report also says Epstein planned to meet Putin in 2014. In an email, Japanese entrepreneur Joi Ito told Epstein that another U.S. billionaire, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, was unable to change his schedule for the trip.
“Hi Jeffrey,” Ito wrote. “I was unable to convince Reid to change his plans to meet you and Putin.” It remains unclear whether such a meeting ever took place.
A later email from Ito referred to the cancellation of the plans after a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, killing 298 people. Three days after the disaster, Ito wrote to Epstein: “Now, after the plane crash, this is a bad idea.”
Militarnyi has previously reported that a former Russian intelligence officer described how agents linked to Putin targeted professionals in Silicon Valley. Former Russian spy Aliia Roza said Russian and Chinese intelligence services used so‑called “honey traps” to obtain technological secrets from the United States.
