The Ministry of Defense of India has decided to purchase 8 next-generation corvettes.
This is stated in the Indian edition of “The Times of India”.
The defense acquisitions council (DAC) meeting brought initial approval of military modernization projects, including the purchase of eight next-generation corvettes.
As it became known, DAC members admitted the need to purchase the NGC (Next-generation Corvettes) corvettes for the Indian Navy at estimated cost of about $4.6 billion.
Officials stressed that these corvettes will become universal platforms for various tasks.
This Includes patrols, escort or deterrent operations, detection and destroying of the enemy’s coastal infrastructure, etc.
It is also noted that the corvettes will be built by a new project of their own Indian development using the latest technology of shipbuilding.
Under the $9.8 billion new military program, the Indian government also approved the creation of a cyber system to provide logistics, financial and personnel processes for the Coast Guard.
In 2020, India began construction of the first anti-submarine corvette of the “ASWSWC”-class for the Indian Navy. The main purpose of ASWSWC corvettes (Anti Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft) is to patrol the littoral zone in coordination with anti-submarine aviation and install naval mines.
The Indian Navy also adopts Kamorta-class anti-submarine corvettes (“Project 28”).
The estimated cost of the ship is 263 million dollars.
In December 2021, the Indian Navy decommissioned the main missile corvette of its own construction. It was in service for 32 years. Three more similar 1,300-ton ships remain in service; they were commissioned in the early 1990s.
