At night, Poland’s airspace was violated by two unidentified drones that crashed near the village of Lukowa. Presumably, one of the drones used to attack Ukraine.
The incident was reported by Polskie Radio, noting that it did not cause any consequences for civilians or infrastructure.
After the objects were spotted, F-35 fighter jets of the Netherlands Air Force, which are stationed in Poland, took to the skies.
The Polish command emphasized that the country has strengthened security measures to protect its airspace.
“We have attracted additional resources to defend Polish skies. We thank our Dutch colleague for the F-35 aircraft. And above all, we thank the wonderful Dutch pilots,” the Polish military said.
Wieslaw Kukula, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, explained that the military usually does not decide to shoot down objects that fly into the country’s airspace.
According to him, this decision was made in order not to endanger civilians from falling debris.
In early September, Dutch F-35 fighter jets began patrolling Poland as part of cooperation with NATO.
The aircraft are stationed at a base in the village of Krzesiny near Poznan.
“Their task is to support the protection of Polish airspace and NATO’s eastern flank, in particular by participating in an air mission under the NSATU program – NATO’s security assistance and training for Ukraine,” the statement said.
Poland regularly deploys aircraft during large-scale Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. This is due to previous cases when air targets have flown into the country.
In August, a Russian Shahed attack drone stayed in Polish airspace for about two and a half hours before it crashed.
