On the night of December 31, strike drones hit a local oil depot in the town of Yartsevo, the Smolensk region.
The strike on the oil depot was confirmed by the Russian head of the Yartsevo district of the Smolensk region, Roman Zakharov.
As a result, fuel was leaked and fuel and lubricants caught fire.
“As a result of the enemy’s attack, fires broke out. The Ministry of Emergency Situations is currently working at the scene to extinguish the open flames,” wrote the head of the Yartsevo district.
Zakharov also said that Special Services and competent authorities were investigating that situation.
Meanwhile, videos and photos of the drone strike near the village of Yartsevo and the burning oil depot have already appeared on the Internet.
The governor of the Smolensk region, Vasily Anokhin, later released a statement on his Telegram account claiming that the fire at the oil depot was caused by the impact of drone debris.
“Today in the Yartsevo district, the air defense of the Russian Ministry of Defense suppressed the attack of Ukrainian UAVs. According to preliminary information, the wreckage of one of the unmanned aerial vehicles fell on the territory of the oil depot,” the Russian official stated.
He also claims that “localization of the consequences” is underway and that “there is no threat to residential areas.”
According to local residents, the first explosions began to be heard after 3:40.
In total, more than a dozen powerful explosions were heard, after which a massive fire broke out in the area of the oil depot, and it is currently being extinguished.
As a reminder, on the night of December 19, drones struck an oil refinery in the Rostov region of Russia.
