On the morning of March 6, Ukrainian drones targeted the Kubanskaya power substation near the city of Abinsk in Russia’s Krasnodar region.
A video showing the fire at the site was shared by the Exilenova+ Telegram channel.
Local authorities confirmed the drone attack but, as usual, claimed that it was caused by ‘falling debris.’ An alert was issued around 7 AM after drones were spotted in the region.
According to the Operational Headquarters of the Krasnodar region, a fire broke out at the power substation near the village of Berezhnoi in the Abinsk district following the drone attack.
This is where the 500 kV Kubanskaya substation is located. Local residents are sharing videos on social media showing black smoke rising from the fire at the site.
According to official data, the fire covers an area of about 120 square meters. Operational and special services have been involved in extinguishing the fire.
The 500 kV Kubanskaya substation, located near the city of Abinsk, is one of the key nodes in the region’s main power grid.
It provides electricity transmission, including towards the Taman Peninsula, and is also used for supplying electricity to the energy-deficient southwest region of Krasnodar region.
In addition, this substation is involved in transmitting power from the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant and energy system nodes in the Tikhoretsk area.
In 2015–2016, the Kubanskaya substation became part of the infrastructure of the so-called energy bridge, which Russia uses to supply electricity to the temporarily occupied Crimea.
Recently, a strike by Ukrainian drones partially disabled the 500 kV Taman power substation, also located in the Krasnodar region.
This facility is a key node in providing electricity to the temporarily occupied Crimean Peninsula.
