On the night of August 9, attack drones hit a Russian military airfield on the outskirts of Lipetsk.

A large-scale fire broke out on the territory of the airbase and explosions occurred at an aviation ordnance depot.

Local residents posted relevant videos and photos on social media and Telegram channels.

The Emergency Situations Ministry in the Lipetsk region of the Russian Federation also confirmed the fire at the military airfield.

The region’s governor, Igor Artamonov, said that the massive drone attack had resulted in “the detonation of explosive objects far from civilian buildings.”

He also said that the UAV crash had damaged an energy infrastructure facility and disrupted power supply. Artamonov added that six people had allegedly been injured and hospitalized.

According to local residents, the ammunition depot is on fire and detonating. Videos and photos of the massive fire are posted online.

Local authorities declared a state of emergency in the Lipetsk municipal district and began evacuating residents of settlements located near the air base.

According to the governor, more than 400 houses are in the evacuation zone. Temporary accommodation centers have been set up. Emergency services and local authorities are working at the scene.

Russian military aircraft have been based at the airbase near Lipetsk, which has been used to strike at the territory of Ukraine since 2022. It is not yet known whether the aggressor country’s combat aircraft were hit by this nighttime drones attack.

In the morning, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that air defense systems had allegedly intercepted and destroyed 75 Ukrainian fixed-wing UAVs overnight. In particular, 19 drones were allegedly shot down over the Lipetsk region.

As a reminder, a Ukrainian strike on August 3 destroyed an aviation ammunition depot at the Russian military airfield Morozovsk. The Russians lost a large number of different types of aviation weapons there, including guiede bombs and air-to-air missiles.
