North Korea (DPRK) has tested a cruise missile from a mobile chassis to hit concrete buildings. It was called “strategic”.

Yonhap reported on this with reference to the DPRK state media.

Officially, the missile launch was called a demonstration of the North Korean military’s ability to counterattack and the readiness of its nuclear forces.

The exercises off the west coast of the DPRK took place on the morning of Wednesday, February 26, local time. They were watched by dictator Kim Jong-un.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that the military had managed to detect and track the launches from North Korea.

According to them, several North Korean cruise missiles were launched in the direction of the Yellow Sea at about 8 a.m.

According to the DPRK’s statement, the missiles hit their targets accurately after flying along an oval trajectory with a total length of 1587 km for 7961-7973 seconds.

According to official photos, the target of at least one missile was a concrete building that imitated a three-story house.

After the hit, the warhead of the missile detonated, leading to the actual destruction of the building.

South Korea notes that the designation of this missile as “strategic” may indicate that it is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The name of the missile has not been disclosed. By its appearance, it can be assumed that it may be one of the variants of the Hwasal family.

Previous launches

The launch was the first since January 25, when the DPRK tested a long-range submarine-launched cruise missile known as the Pulhwasal-3-31.

The first test of this cruise missile took place on January 24, 2024, from a ground launcher. On February 28, a test launch was conducted from a submarine.
