The South Korean police are investigating a cyberattack by North Korean hackers that resulted in information on military technology.
The Korean media outlet told NK News that important data on the K2 Black Panther main battle tank, as well as Baekdu and Geumgang reconnaissance aircraft, had been stolen.
This could have serious consequences for the country’s defense capability.
It is assumed that North Korea will be able to use the information to develop stealth drones and effective measures to evade surveillance.
The K2 Black Panther tank was developed by the South Korean Defense Research Agency and built by Hyundai Rotem.
The tank was introduced in 2008 and is the country’s main battle tank. Currently, 225 units are in service.
The Baekdu and Geumgang are reconnaissance aircraft that South Korea has been actively using to surveil the border over the past 20 years and monitor North Korea’s military activities.
According to local media reports, the K2 data leak occurred when engineers working at one of the manufacturing plants moved to a competing company.
Employees of the manufacturing plant took with them the drawings of some of the structures on the external drives.
Their new employer tried to export this technology to a Middle Eastern country, so it is believed that the leak went beyond South Korea.
As for the Baekdu and Geumgang reconnaissance aircraft, Korean media reported that a South Korean defense contractor that produces manuals for the operation and maintenance of military equipment was hacked by North Korean hackers.
They stole important technical data on the two aircraft, including information on technology and the latest technical updates, operational capabilities, and maintenance.
