Denmark plans to acquire long-range precision air defense systems to strengthen protection against threats from Russia.
This was announced by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Reuters news agency reports.
She noted that the government had increased its budget to address critical gaps that emerged after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“There is no doubt that Russia will remain a threat to Europe and Denmark for a long time,” Frederiksen said.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that the new systems will be capable of intercepting missiles and drones, as well as striking targets deep within enemy territory.
Poulsen did not disclose the cost or financing details.
“The war in Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the importance of the ability to strike the enemy and operate deep within its territory,” he said, adding that Denmark has emphasized the need for an integrated air defense system.
Denmark recently purchased the Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG surface-to-air missile system to modernize its ground-based air defenses.
The new long-range systems will be acquired as part of an investment program aimed at strengthening the kingdom’s ground-based missile defense.
Poulsen said the decision responds to the growing threat of Russian drones and missiles.
The government plans to invest over €7.7 billion in long- and medium-range air defense systems under the program.
