The Danish government supported the allocation of an additional 2,000 artillery shells to Ukraine.
Acting Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced this after the meeting of the Foreign Policy Committee.
The Danish ministers did not disclose the details of the new military aid to Ukraine, but clarified that it was about ammunition worth about a quarter of a billion Danish kroner (€33.5 million).
“The situation is such that we all see that a counteroffensive has been announced. It is already underway. Ukraine managed to contain the Russians, and now it’s time to respond again. For this, it is necessary that they (Ukrainians – ed.) have the necessary opportunities – in particular, ammunition,” commented the Danish Foreign Minister.
In turn, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized that a donation of this size “is not something that will give Ukraine confidence that it has enough ammunition, but only a contribution to solving a specific acute problem.”
“Additional ammunition is needed. So this is a contribution to solving the current problem,” he said, adding that more needs to be done to increase ammunition production.
In addition, it is reported that later this week the Minister of Defense of Denmark will take part in a meeting in Brussels, where they are expected to discuss the training of Ukrainian pilots on Western fighter jets.
It is not yet known whether Denmark will provide F-16s to Ukraine. The government is open to considering the matter, as previously announced.
Troels Lund Poulsen believes that it is still too early to talk about the free transfer of fighter jets. The government will consider this issue later this year.
Military instructors from Denmark will be training Ukrainian Leopard 1 tank crews throughout the summer. Denmark was to send 80 Leopard 1 tanks to the Ukrainian military.
This regarded the supply of 80 Leopard 1A5DK tanks after repairs to Ukraine, which were purchased by the German company FFG after their final withdrawal from the Danish military in 2005.
As previously reported, at the end of May, Denmark increased its spending on military aid to Ukraine by 17.9 billion Danish krones ($2.59 billion). It regards strengthening the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the short and medium term.
