Russia is developing a new guided bomb with a range of up to 400 kilometers.
Vadym Skibitskyi, Deputy Head of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, reported this in an interview with Reuters.
“Russia is working on modifications that would allow these bombs to reach distances of up to 400 km. This would enable Moscow to strike even more Ukrainian cities without using missiles,” the agency reported.
It is likely referring to cheaper cruise missiles equipped with warheads taken from aerial bombs and a new rocket engine to increase their range. They are planned to be launched from Su-34 fighter-bombers.
Russia has already established production of aerial bombs with a range of up to 200 km. The first recorded use of these weapons took place in late October 2025.
According to Skibitskyi, the Russians plan to produce around 500 of these weapons by the end of the year. This indicates a shift to mass production.
“Russia is launching serial production of a new glide bomb capable of flying up to 200 km from the launch point, and plans to manufacture about 500 units by the end of this year,” the Defense Intelligence representative said.
Currently, two new types of Russian aerial bombs are known: the UMPB-5R glide bomb with a jet engine, and an updated version equipped with a universal planning and correction module (UMPK) featuring improved aerodynamics.
Both systems are designed to strike targets at long range without the carrier aircraft entering the zone of Ukrainian air defenses. This allows Russian aviation to operate from a safer distance.
An analysis of UMPB-5R debris indicates that it is equipped with a Chinese-origin SW800Pro-Y turbojet engine (manufactured by Swiwin). This type of engine is typically used in drones and large model aircraft.
Russia is also using these engines in S8000 Banderol–type cruise missiles, which confirms their versatility and suitability for mass production.
As for the modernized UMPK, according to Russian claims, the updated version of the FAB-500T bomb with an improved tail section is capable of traveling more than 100 km.
