M113 armored personnel carriers have already been shipped by Denmark as part of military assistance to Ukraine.

A video featuring the Danish M113G4DK version of the vehicle and Ukrainian military personnel on board of it was published on the Internet.

A characteristic feature of this version is an additional pair of caterpillar chassis rollers and additional external fuel tanks.

The Ukrainian M113G4DKs are armed with a 12.7 mm Browning M2 heavy machine gun.

Denmark’s intention to transfer a certain amount of M113s to Ukraine was first reported back in April.

Previously, the M113 fleet of the Armed Forces of Denmark reached up to 700 vehicles at different times. In 2020, the country announced its intention to dispose of the armored personnel carriers used since 1964 and switch to the modern wheeled Piranha V APC.

Danish M113s are reported to have undergone several modernizations in the 1990s and 2010s, which were designated G3 DK and G4 DK accordingly.

The vehicles received a more powerful 10.6 liter 300 hp diesel engine with a turbocharger. At the same time, the engine meets the EURO2 requirements and can be replaced in the field within an hour. M113 G3s were also equipped with external fuel tanks and modern caterpillars. The heater was also replaced. Upon that, the vehicle’s weight increased to 15 tons.

The APC also received a new, improved control and braking system.

The hull of the 70 vehicles was lengthened by 66 cm, and one roller was added.

The vehicles that were used in Afghanistan received reinforced armor protection of the bottom and new trackpads. In the paratrooper compartment, adjustable seats were installed.

The Danish military has a number of vehicles developed on the M113 basis: mobile command posts, counter-artillery radars, self-propelled mortars, engineering vehicles, repair and maintenance vehicles, sanitary armored personnel carriers, fire trucks, and APCs with 25 mm gun modules.
