American congressmembers are aiming to prevent the Trump administration from using federal funds for a U.S. invasion of NATO member countries.
Republican Congressman Don Bacon, one of the bill’s co-authors, made its text public.
The bill, titled the No Funds for NATO Invasion Act, has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The document was prepared and introduced for consideration by a bipartisan group of 23 members of Congress. Among the co-authors are Republican Don Bacon and Democrats Bill Keating, Steny Hoyer, and Brendan Boyle.
“The No Funds for NATO Invasion Act clearly sends a message to our allies and partners, as well as to the world, that invading the territory of a U.S. ally is unacceptable,” said the congressmembers.
They added that the Trump administration should stop provocative rhetoric and, together with NATO allies, begin addressing real threats.

With this bill, the congressmembers aim to create a legal “safeguard” to prevent the U.S. administration from making unilateral military decisions against allies without direct congressional approval.
The initiative comes amid Donald Trump’s statements about the possibility of Greenland joining the United States. The American president expressed concerns about the presence of Russian and Chinese forces in the Arctic and described the island as a strategically important territory.
Meanwhile, leaders of major European countries issued a joint statement affirming Denmark’s sovereignty and Greenland’s status as an autonomous territory.
The UK government is holding talks with European allies about the possible deployment of a military contingent in Greenland.
Statements about the need to deploy at least one European brigade in Greenland are also being made in Germany.
