A Russian prisoner of war, captured by soldiers of the 93rd Kholodny Yar Separate Mechanized Brigade, ended up defending a position alongside Ukrainian troops.
According to the news outlet Novynarnia, the brigade’s soldiers, who are defending the village of Rusyn Yar in the Kostyantynivka direction, captured Russian soldier Danylo Sychov. He is a member of the 242nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces from the Volgograd region.
Sychov is 23 years old. He previously served in Armenia and later faced trial for a fight with an officer. To avoid punishment, he agreed to take part in the war against Ukraine.
Sychov joined an assault group trying to capture a Ukrainian position, but the attack failed. Before the mission, the Russian command had told the troops that the position was supposedly empty.
During the battle, the Russian soldier was wounded, and most of his fellow servicemen were killed. Seeing the Ukrainian troops, he decided to surrender.
After that, the Russian soldier stayed on the Ukrainian position for almost two and a half months. He helped build fortifications, carried out general duties, and even assisted in combat.
The Ukrainian soldiers treated him well: he was provided with warm clothing, including wool socks and thermal underwear, protective gear, and food.
According to Sychov himself, his motivation for staying with the Ukrainian troops was the realization that the Russian command had issued orders not to take prisoners.
He understood that Russian forces would kill him along with the Ukrainian defenders.
It is worth noting that a similar case occurred earlier this year. A citizen of Uzbekistan was tricked into signing a contract with the Russian occupation army. Later, he switched sides and now fights for Ukraine as part of the “Siberian” battalion.
