The Canadian military is seeking to sign a contract for the supply of American HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems.
The Canadian media outlet, the Ottawa Citizen, reported that this is happening amid US President Donald Trump’s vows to economically weaken Canada.
According to sources in the defense industry, the Canadian government is considering purchasing HIMARS through the Foreign Military Sale mechanism.
This mechanism involves purchasing directly from the US government.
Canadian Department of National Defense spokesperson Kened Sadiku said that the Long-Range Precision Strike project, which includes the purchase of HIMARS, will significantly increase the country’s defense capabilities.
The cost of the project could reach $5 billion and will include the purchase of launchers, fire control software, ammunition, and spare parts.
The HIMARS purchase has been criticized by military analysts and representatives of the Canadian defense industry.
Despite Trump’s statements, the Canadian military continues to purchase American equipment.
In 2023, Canada ordered almost $30 billion in new military systems, most of which will be supplied by US companies.
This included $8 billion in contracts with Boeing for new reconnaissance aircraft and $2.5 billion for the purchase of American drones.
Earlier, it was reported that American companies control key systems on Canadian F-35 fighters and new warships, which could pose risks to the independence of Canada’s defense policy. Canada is already reconsidering the purchase of F-35s amid tensions with the United States.
