Canada has announced the allocation of about C$389 million (more than $280 million) to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets.

The office of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this.

The money is allocated through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group Air Force Capability Coalition.

Part of these funds will also be used to provide critical equipment to support Ukraine’s safe operation of F-16s.

“Sourced through previously announced military funding, this commitment will support training for pilots in Ukraine’s Armed Forces as well as provide critical equipment to support Ukraine’s safe operation of F-16s,” Trudeau’s office said in a statement.

In addition, the government disclosed the details of a new military aid package for Ukraine, announced the day before, worth C$500 million (about $380 million).

“This includes almost $444 million to Canada’s Department of National Defence to support the costs of military equipment, assistance, and training for Ukraine’s Armed Forces as well as over $56 million for the NATO Comprehensive Assistance Package (CAP) Trust Fund for Ukraine to help rebuild the Ukrainian security and defense sector and advance Ukraine’s transition toward full interoperability with NATO,” the document says.

The aid was announced during a meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., when President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

It is noted that these additional funds complemented Canada’s existing military assistance to Ukraine, for a total of $1.1 billion this year.

Canada supports Ukraine in various European initiatives, and provides Ukraine with weapons and military equipment.

The Canadian government provides funding for the purchase of weapons under the Czech initiative, including artillery rounds, the German initiative to purchase air defense systems, and the Polish tank initiative.

Canada is also preparing to deliver new LAV 6.0 ACSV wheeled armored personnel carriers to the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The first batch of these APCs was shipped to Europe in June.
