Canada shipped Leopard 2A4 tanks to arm the Ukrainian military to Europe.

Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, reported that the aircraft carrying tanks had taken off from Halifax.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense also confirmed that tanks are already on their way to Ukraine.

“The aircraft carrying the first Leopard 2 main battle tanks, allocated to Ukraine from Canada, took off from Halifax,” the report said.

Canada will transfer four Leopard 2 main battle tanks from its Armed Forces to Ukraine.

Such a commitment “ended disputes over whether Canada would transfer tanks from its military stockpiles to Ukraine.”

When commenting on the decision to transfer only four pieces of equipment, Anand noted that Canada only has 82 Leopard 2 tanks in service.

At the same time, she did not specify how many of them are combat-ready.

Ottawa will also provide spare parts and ammunition for the tanks.

In addition, instructors will come to Europe from Canada to train Ukrainian tank crews.

In the meantime, the Head of the Canadian Defense Ministry left the possibility of sending more Leopards in the future open.

On January 25, the German government allowed the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and agreed to re-export these tanks from other countries involved in the equipment’s transfer to Ukraine. In the first stage, Germany will provide Ukraine with 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks from the Bundeswehr depots.
