The Department of National Defence of Canada has announced the creation of a new Canadian Joint Forces Command (CJFC).
Its mission will be to strengthen the military’s operational readiness and effectiveness in an increasingly complex global security environment, according to Slawa TV.
The Russian-Ukrainian war was one of the main reasons for the reorganization.
The CJFC will combine the management of logistics, military medicine, readiness support, and joint force development. Canadian media note that similar changes have already been implemented in the Australian military.
The commander of the new command, General Darcy Molstad, stated that the CJFC will also work on developing new types of weapons, including systems for countering drones. In the future, the structure will also take over the functions of the military police.
According to Molstad, several years of work went into the reform, and the war in Ukraine only reinforced the need to create a joint command for those units that do not belong to the land, naval, air forces, or special operations forces.
The Canadian military is paying particular attention to the situation in the Arctic, which makes up 40% of the country’s territory and more than 70% of its coastline. In the new policy presented in December, Russia is identified as the main challenge and a potential threat of forcibly violating borders. China is also showing interest in the region.
