Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated that all options remained on the table, including the potential deployment of Canadian military personnel to Ukraine as part of future peacekeeping efforts.
This was reported by The Guardian.
Trudeau emphasized that Canada had actively supported Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, including by training Ukrainian forces in Britain.
He added that Canada was considering more direct involvement in maintaining peace in Ukraine, at the time when a peace agreement to be reached.
“Canada has looked at the ways it can best help and as I’ve said a few days ago, everything’s on the table …We’re not going to get ahead of the discussions on how to keep a peace that isn’t yet in place, but Canada will be there and is open to doing what is necessary,” Trudeau said regarding the possible deployment of troops to Ukraine.
On March 3, the Canadian prime minister is set to meet with King Charles III in the UK to discuss key international issues, potentially including Ukraine.
The possibility of deploying peacekeeping forces to Ukraine has been discussed for some time among NATO members. Several countries, including Switzerland, Italy, the UK, France, and Canada have expressed support for the idea.
However, any troop deployment would only take place after hostilities cease and a peace agreement is signed. The goal would be to establish a joint deterrence force with European allies to prevent a resurgence of war.
Previously, Militarnyi reported that Switzerland could’ve provided 200 military personnel to participate in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine with the consent of the country’s government.
The UK government has also voiced readiness to deploy the peacekeepers to Ukraine once a peace deal would be in place.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has suggested that Britain’s commitment to a peacekeeping mission should’ve encouraged NATO allies, particularly Germany, to take a public stance on forming a European peacekeeping force for Ukraine.
In addition, The Times reported that the UK was considering sending Typhoon fighter jets to patrol Ukrainian airspace as part of a future security arrangement.
