Chrystia Freeland, Canadian prime ministerial candidate, believes that Canada should strengthen relations with the United Kingdom to protect itself from possible threats from Donald Trump.
According to The Telegraph, Freeland said that the US president directly threatens Canadian sovereignty because of his rhetoric about the country’s possible accession as the 51st state.
To ensure Canada’s security, she plans to expand cooperation with European NATO allies.
“I will make sure that France and the United Kingdom, who have nuclear weapons, will be there,” she said.
In response, Donald Trump sharply criticized Freeland, calling her “crazy.”
“She is absolutely terrible for the country. She’s incompetent in so many ways, and she’s only hurting Canada,” the US president stated.
Freeland’s political opponents also condemned her position. In particular, conservative candidate from Alberta Danielle Smith emphasized: “The United States is our friend and security ally.”
The new US administration is proposing at a high level to integrate Canada as the 51st state, and Trump calls current Prime Minister Trudeau “the governor of Canada.”
In addition to confrontation with neighboring Mexico and Canada, the new administration is also quarreling with its European allies, particularly Denmark.
The reason for the quarrel is Greenland, which Trump and his team propose to integrate into the United States.
Such talk has caused concern among European leaders, who reacted sharply to such statements.
At the end of January, it was reported that France discussed with Denmark the possibility of sending troops to Greenland in response to the possibility of the United States annexing the island.
During a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels, officials expressed “very strong support” for Copenhagen and “were ready to consider [sending troops]” if necessary.
