Germany plans to send troops to Poland to help strengthen the eastern border with Belarus and Russia.
The Brussels Times reported the move, citing German authorities.
The deployment involves Bundeswehr units participating in Poland’s “Eastern Shield” program, aimed at reinforcing border infrastructure amid rising security concerns over Russia. The mission is scheduled to begin in April 2026 and is expected to continue through the end of 2027.
According to the report, German forces will carry out engineering tasks, including the construction of fortifications, trenches, anti-tank obstacles, and other defensive structures.
Berlin stresses that the mission is non-combat and purely defensive. The decision reflects Germany’s NATO commitments and aims to strengthen the alliance’s eastern flank.
The German government frames the support as part of collective deterrence against Russia’s aggressive policies and Belarus’s growing militarization. Poland views Germany’s participation as a sign of European solidarity and the allies’ readiness to jointly respond to potential regional threats.
Militarnyi previously reported that Poland had begun construction on portions of the Eastern Shield defense system along the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region.
