The UK has officially confirmed its plans to transfer Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine.
This is stated on the website of the United Kingdom Government.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reaffirmed this decision during a telephone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The leaders reflected on the current state of Russia’s war in Ukraine, with successive Ukrainian victories pushing Russian troops back and compounding their military and morale issues.
They agreed on the need to seize on this moment with an acceleration of global military and diplomatic support to Ukraine.
“The Prime Minister outlined the UK’s ambition to intensify our support to Ukraine, including through the provision of Challenger 2 tanks and additional artillery systems,” the report said.
Sunak and Zelensky welcomed other international commitments in this vein, including Poland’s offer to provide Ukraine with a company of Leopard tanks.
Rishi Sunak stressed that he and the whole UK Government would be working intensively with international partners to deliver rapidly the kind of support which will allow Ukraine to press their advantage, win this war and secure a lasting peace.
Challenger 2 tanks will significantly strengthen Ukraine, being one of the most heavily armored among Western tanks.
The main armament of the tank is its 120mm L30A1 gun of 55 calibers in length.
Earlier, British editions reported that 12 Challenger 2 tanks would be handed over to Ukraine.
In general, the UK has 227 tanks in reserves and 12 of them will probably not matter much on the battlefield for Ukraine, but this will be the first time that the Western country agrees to send its modern heavy armored vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
