Ukraine will receive 30,000 FPV drones from the UK and other NATO member states.
This was reported on the British government’s website.
Defence Secretary John Healey announced this milestone alongside Latvian Defence Minister Andris Sprūds at the Ukraine Defence Contact Group held at Ramstein Air Base.
30,000 drones will be sent to Ukraine after £45 million worth of contracts were placed by the international Drone Capability Coalition, co-led by the UK and Latvia as the UK steps up leadership supporting Ukraine in 2025.
Funding for the new 30,000 drones comes from the UK, Denmark, Netherlands, Latvia and Sweden.
These state-of-the-art, first-person view drones will help Ukraine fight against Russian aggression, allowing Ukraine’s Armed Forces to manoeuvre past Russian air defences to target enemy positions and armoured vehicles.
In February 2024, Ukraine’s allies created the Drone Coalition, which aims to supply various types of drones to the Ukrainian military.
This initiative is proposed by Latvia and coordinated together with the United Kingdom.
In total, the Coalition brings together 17 countries: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine.
The Drone Coalition has a joint fund for the purchase of drones, which holds regular tenders as a way to create innovative products on a competitive basis.
The rest of the assistance is provided by the Drone Coalition members on a bilateral basis in the form of unmanned aerial vehicles and financial support.
In October, Ukrainian drone companies became the second largest bidder in the second series of tenders announced by the UK as part of this initiative.
