The United States will ship $74 million worth of Javelin anti-tank systems and missiles to Brazil.

The State Department has made a determination approving a Foreign Military Sale.

On August 9, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification for the Foreign Military Sale of Javelin Missiles and related equipment to the Government of Brazil for an estimated cost of up to $74 million.

The Government of Brazil has requested to buy up to two hundred twenty-two (222) Javelin missiles, FGM-148, and thirty-three (33) Javelin Command Launch Units (CLU).

The deal included Enhanced Producibility Basic Skills Trainers, missile simulation rounds, as well as other associated equipment and services, and other related elements of logistical and program support.

The estimated total cost is up to $74 million.

The press release emphasized that this proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of an important regional partner that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in South America.

The US State Department noted that the proposed sale will improve the Brazilian Army’s capability to meet future threats by increasing their antiarmor capacity. Brazil will have no difficulty absorbing these weapons into its armed forces.

The prime contractors for the deal will be Raytheon/Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture, Orlando, FL, and Tucson, AZ.

Javelin is a man-portable surface-to-air missile manufactured by the American companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. The missile has a thermal homing head. Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile that allows the operator to hide immediately after the shot. It is in service with the Armed Forces of the United States and several other countries. The system is designed to destroy armored vehicles and air targets at low altitudes (helicopters, UAVs).

The FGM-148 Javelin ATGM missile has a thermal homing head, thus the operator of the missile system does not need to monitor and adjust the flight of the missile after launch while it is approaching the target.
