The Belgian government will allocate a financial package for the air defense initiative and provide Ukraine with its own missiles for air defense systems.
RTBF reported on this with reference to the Ministry of Defense of Belgium.
The formed package worth EUR 200 million will be used in the framework of the German initiative, which aims to purchase air defense systems for Ukraine.
In addition, Belgium will provide Ukraine with missiles for air defense systems from its stockpile. It has not been officially reported what type of missiles are involved.
There is a high probability that these will be RIM-7 anti-aircraft missiles, which the country has already transferred to Ukraine in the previous military aid package.
At that time, Belgium bought eight RIM-7 missiles from Germany, which were used on German frigates of the Bremen type.
At the moment, the missiles will be transferred from their own warehouses, as they are used by the Belgian frigates Leopold 1 and Louise-Marie.
“We will remain mobilized in the coming weeks to support Ukraine: when Russia stops its invasion and gives up the illegally occupied territories, we will never stop repeating our request for an end to hostilities and a return to political and diplomatic dialogue,” Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder said.
The German government has recently initiated a search for air defense systems to transfer to Ukraine.
At the same time, the country is open to new participants who will help in the search for suitable systems and will also be able to allocate a financial package for their acquisition.
Militarnyi previously reported that Spain will transfer missiles to Ukraine to the Patriot air defense system.
Government sources of the newspaper claim that the decision was made amid pressure from NATO and the European Union.
