Belgium will consider a proposal to purchase and transfer three Caesar self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine.
The Belgian media RTBF reported that the Ministry of Defense plans to allocate €12 million for this purpose.
The Belgian Ministry of Defense noted that a proposal to acquire Caesar self-propelled howitzers for Ukraine will be submitted to the Council of Ministers “in the near future.”
The RTBF reminded that in January of this year, France formed an Artillery Coalition with the United States to support the Ukrainian military.
It comprises 25 countries, including Belgium.
The stated goal is to provide Ukraine with 72 additional Caesar self-propelled howitzers in 2024.
France commits to supply 12 artillery systems. Belgium is responsible for three.
The French Ministry of Armed Forces said that the Artillery Coalition seeks to join forces to help Ukraine have artillery forces that meet its needs in the short and long term.
The initiative is also seen as another crucial step in Ukraine’s transition from Soviet-era to Western artillery systems.
However, this transition faced a major obstacle in the lack of ammunition for Western equipment.
The launch of the Artillery Coalition comes a day after French President Emmanuel Macron said that Paris would supply Ukraine with a new batch of about 40 SCALP long-range air-launched cruise missiles, as well as “several hundred” bombs.
This year, Luxembourg also ordered one Caesar 155mm self-propelled howitzer for the Ukrainian military.
