The Australian Government will provide a new military assistance package to Ukraine.
This package responds to Ukraine’s requests for armored vehicles and ammunition.
The aid is provided to strengthen the capabilities of Ukrainian troops on the battlefield.
Australia will transfer 70 military vehicles to Ukraine, including 28 M113 tracked armored personnel carriers, 14 special operations vehicles and 28 MAN 40M medium trucks, as well as 14 trailers. Kyiv will also receive 105mm artillery ammunition.
In addition, Canberra will provide the United Nations with $10 million to meet the humanitarian needs of Ukraine.
“This additional assistance will make a real difference, helping the Ukrainian people who continue to show great courage in the face of Russia’s illegal, unprovoked and immoral war,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
Australia will also extend duty-free access for goods imported from Ukraine for a further 12 months.
The amount of the new aid package from Australia is $110 million Australian dollars ($74 million USD).
These commitments announced today bring Australia’s total contribution in support of Ukraine to $790 million, including $610 million in military assistance.
Anthony Albanese emphasized during the communication with the media that Australia would support Ukraine as long as it was needed.
As previously reported, in May, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksii Reznikov appealed to Australia with a request to supply the Ukrainian Army with Hawkei armored vehicles.
He also called on Sydney to join the international tank coalition aimed at strengthening the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Minister recalled that Australia had already given significant military support to Ukraine.
