The Australian government will provide Ukraine with the largest military aid package since Russia’s invasion.
The tranche is worth $250 million, ABC News reports, citing Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles.
He announced the aid package on the final day of the NATO summit in Washington DC.
The military aid package from Australia will include guided missiles and air defense missiles, anti-tank weapons, ammunition, and a shipment of boots.
“This will not be the last package that we announce. We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes for Ukraine to resolve this conflict on its own terms,” Mr Marles said.
Australia will also contribute a number of personnel to NATO’s new Nato Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), which will coordinate the provision of military equipment and training to the Ukrainian military by NATO Allies and partners.
Its aim is to provide Ukraine with long-term security assistance, ensuring enhanced, predictable and coordinated support.
The Alliance explained that the NSATU, which would operate on the territory of NATO member states, would support Ukraine’s self-defense in accordance with the UN Charter.
The total cost of Australia’s support for the Ukrainian army reaches $1.1 billion.
ABC News emphasized that Australia and other non-Allied partners from the Asia-Pacific nations had sent delegations to the NATO summit in Washington to strengthen ties with the alliance amid concerns about possible Chinese aggression and Beijing’s relations with Moscow.
In June, the Royal Australian Air Force received the first MQ-4C patrol drone from the American company Northrop Grumman.
Australia’s surface warships also began to be equipped with modern NSM anti-ship missiles.
