An explosion has occurred at the BAE Systems Glascoed plant in Monmouthshire, where artillery shells are filled with explosives.

A joint investigation into the cause of the explosion has now been launched with the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Safety protocols were immediately enacted, and emergency services arrived at the scene of the explosion. All personnel have been evacuated, and the emergency response team continues to monitor the situation, BAE Systems said.

The explosion occurred at 10:49 a.m. local time, and, according to the company, the situation is currently under control.

According to official employee records, the BAE Systems Glascoed plant employs more than 500 people.

BAE Systems reported that it would increase the production of artillery ammunition eightfold and build its own stockpile of 155mm shells.

Building a stockpile is a top priority for the Ministry of Defence, as the UK has found itself in a difficult position due to the transfer of large amounts of ammunition to Ukraine.

The value of the additional order is estimated at £130 million, which will enable the expansion of the production line in England and Wales.

The Ministry of Defence signed the first contract for the production of ammunition worth £280 million in 2022. The total value of the contract is currently estimated at £410 million.
