During the US special operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, one of the army’s helicopters, a heavy twin-rotor MH-47 Chinook, was seriously damaged.
According to The New York Times, the helicopter was targeted by Venezuelan fire as it approached Maduro’s compound in Caracas.
According to US officials, the helicopter commander, who was also the mission planner, was shot three times in the leg but continued to fly the helicopter.
Despite the damage, the helicopter remained airworthy, although its stability was jeopardized.
General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated that “the failure of one component of this well-oiled machine could have jeopardized the entire operation.”
Despite the danger, the crew managed to land, disembark the commandos and return the damaged helicopter to the USS Iwo Jima off the coast of Venezuela.
Earlier, it was reported that several US military personnel were injured, but no one was killed.
