Airbus Helicopters has launched flight tests of H160M Guépard, its new military helicopter developed for the French Armed Forces under the joint light helicopter program.

France has selected H160M as a common platform for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

The French Ministry of the Armed Forces plans to procure 169 helicopters to replace five legacy types currently in service or recently retired.

Based on the H160 civil model, which has been in operation for more than three years, the military version features major upgrades and is positioned as one of the most advanced platforms in its class.

To speed up development, Airbus is building three prototypes. The first will be used for flight and live-fire testing in 2026. The second, now in final assembly, will support tests in extreme temperatures.

“H160M is designed for future military operations: reliable, agile, highly connected, and equipped with the latest sensors and weapons. Most importantly, it is scalable and adaptable to evolving operational environments,” said Airbus Helicopters CEO.

H160 is a six-tonne class helicopter powered by Safran Arrano engines. It incorporates 68 patents aimed at increasing efficiency and safety, cutting environmental impact, and simplifying maintenance.

H160M is equipped with Thales FlytX avionics and a mission management system developed by Airbus, offering enhanced tactical situational awareness. Its communications suite enables integration into joint air, land and maritime operations. It is also the first Airbus helicopter to come with standard connectivity for unmanned systems.

Key sensors include the Euroflir 410 electro-optical system from Safran and Thales’ AirMaster C radar. The self-protection system provides threat detection across the electromagnetic and optical spectrums.

Airbus’ HForce modular weapons system allows integration of various armaments. H160M can carry 12.7 mm machine guns in pods, guided missiles, and 7.62 mm machine guns on pintle mounts or articulated ramps.

Deliveries to the French Armed Forces are scheduled to begin in late 2028. Airbus will provide maintenance and operational support for the first 10 years.
