The conditions of detaining the Russian prisoners of war in the camps will be compliant with Ukraine’s international obligations.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted the Decree № 394 of April 1, 2022, according to which the Ministry of Justice must create conditions for the detention of prisoners of war in the respective camps and precincts in compliance with Ukraine’s international obligations.
In particular, those regarding international humanitarian law and the requirements of national law.
This Decree comes into force simultaneously with the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Concerning the Regulation of Issues Related to Prisoners of War in a Special Period”.
We previously reported that due to the statement of Iryna Vereshchuk, Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, approximately 600 Russians have been taken prisoner of war by the Ukrainian Defense Forces since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
According to her, Ukraine has to establish a special camp in accordance with international law.
Ukraine has already held several exchanges of prisoners with Russia.
Ukraine has freed Zmiyinyi Island hostages and the crew of the “Sapphire” vessel from the ruscist captivity.
Ukraine had also conducted the prisoner exchange – 86 soldiers, including 15 women, returned.
