A naval missile brigade will be formed in Poland on the basis of the naval missile unit (Polish: Morska Jednostka Rakietowa, abbreviated MJR).
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced this on his page in X.
“The relevant concept for its creation has already been signed,” the head of the Polish defense ministry wrote.
The naval missile unit is armed with coastal missile systems with NSM anti-ship missiles.
The self-propelled launchers of the anti-ship system are based on the Polish Jelcz P662.D43 chassis.
They, along with the command and control vehicle (C&CV), communication vehicle (CV), and transport charging vehicles (TCV), are part of the battery.
The two batteries are part of a mobile coastal division, which has a command and control vehicle, a communication vehicle, a radar station (radar) TRS-15C Odra-C, and a mobile workshop. All vehicles are based on the Jelcz chassis.
Two such divisions are now part of the naval missile unit of the Polish Navy. It was deployed on January 1, 2015, on the basis of the coastal missile division, which was created in 2011 and existed until December 31, 2014.
Since its creation, the personnel of the naval missile unit and its equipment have repeatedly participated in various exercises, including international ones.
These separate units have been deployed several times in Estonia, first as part of the Spring Storm 2019 exercise, the second time in two years in Spring Storm 2021, and during the Hedgehog 2022 exercise. In 2021, one of the batteries was involved in Sea Shield 21 in Romania and in 2024 – in Northern Viking 2024 maneuvers in Iceland.
The range of the Polish coastal missile system is 220 km, but experts, in the absence of the possibility of horizon detection of a target using regular radar and without the presence of airborne radar (long-range radar detection), called the effective range 40 km. However, in 2024, Poland received two 340 AEW aircraft from Sweden.
It has not yet been reported what organizational and staffing changes will be made with the reformatting of the unit into a missile brigade. However, a new division will likely be created within the brigade, thereby increasing the number of launchers.
