The U.S. Department of State announced the approval of the sale of Abrams tanks, support vehicles, and ammunition to Poland. The transaction amount is $3.75 billion.

The relevant document was published on the Defense Security Cooperation Agency’s website.

The deal would cover the sale of 116 M1A1 tanks worth US $3.75 billion, 12 M88A2 armored recovery vehicles, 8 M1110 Joint Assault Bridge System, 6 M577A3 Command Post Carriers, 26 M1152A1 HMMWVs, and 26 JLTV vehicles.

In addition to the vehicles, 116 12.7 mm M2 machine guns, 232 7.62 mm M240 machine guns, and 6 spare AGT1500 turboshaft engines will be delivered.

It is noted that the announced cost of a package of weapons is the highest estimated quantity and could be reduced during implementation.

“The proposed sale will improve Poland’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing a credible force that is capable of deterring adversaries and participating in NATO operations. Poland will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces,” the document says.

Mariusz Błaszczak, Polish Defense Minister, shared that deliveries within this contract could begin as early as 2023.

“Another step towards increasing the armored potential of the Polish Armed Forces is passed. The US State Department approved the sale of an additional 116 Abrams tanks with ammunition to Poland. We move to negotiating the price. The first deliveries would be possible in 2023. A strong army means safe Poland,” wrote Mariusz Błaszczak.

Tanks for Poland

In July, Poland agreed a contract to purchase 116 M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks to replace its own Т-72М/М1/М1Р tanks transferred to Ukraine, as well as a number of PT-91 Twardy tanks.

M1A1 is an upgraded version of the M1 Abrams that entered service with the U.S. military in 1991.

A total of 4,796 М1А1 tanks were built for the United States Army and 221 tanks for the United States Marine Corps.

Also, on April 5, 2022, Mariusz Błaszczak, Polish Minister of National Defense, signed a contract to purchase 250 M1A2 Abrams SEP V3 tanks.

They are planned to be produced by the end of 2024, and their delivery to Poland will begin in early 2025.

The military of the 1st Warsaw Armored Brigade named after Tadeusz Kościuszko is already training to use the Abrams tanks.

After a series of training on simulators, the first crews performed firing tasks in defense and offense.

Yesterday, the first batch of Korean-made military equipment was delivered to Poland. This regards 10 K2 Black Panther main battle tanks and 24 K9A1 Thunder 155mm self-propelled howitzers.
