The Ministry of National Defence of Turkey has deployed six F-16 fighter jets and air defense systems to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The Ministry of National Defence of Turkey announced this.
The deployment began on March 9, 2026, as part of a phased plan to strengthen security in the region.
According to the ministry, these measures will significantly improve the protection of Northern Cyprus. The fighter jets are intended to help defend the northern part of the island from potential attacks by Iran.
At the same time, the aircraft could also potentially be used for strikes against Iran, as well as for operations against paramilitary groups in Syria or Iraq.
On the night of March 8, 2026, Iran launched a large-scale attack using Shahed-type kamikaze drones and medium-range ballistic missiles against the British sovereign bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus.
Tehran described the attack as an act of self-defense, stating that the bases had been used to refuel and launch U.S. and Israeli fighter jets, which previously carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Although Tehran is currently avoiding direct missile strikes on mainland Turkey, tensions between the two countries have reached a critical level due to escalating proxy conflicts.
Iran-backed paramilitary groups, including units of Al-Hashd al-Shaabi, have shelled Turkish military bases in northern Iraq. Ankara views these actions as an attempt by Iran to push the Turkish military contingent out of the region.
In addition, the Turkish intelligence service MIT has obtained information about preparations for potential strikes on the port infrastructure of Famagusta and Ercan Airport. Iran reportedly views the presence of Turkish troops in Northern Cyprus as a potential base for NATO operations.
Ankara has accused Tehran of exporting terrorism and threatening maritime security in the region.
Turkey currently operates one of the largest fleets of F-16 fighter jets in the world, with around 260 aircraft in service. The country’s air force operates several different variants, ranging from older Block 30 models to more modern Block 50+ aircraft.
Most of these jets were produced domestically by Turkish Aerospace Industries under a U.S. license.
Due to complicated political relations with the United States, Turkey has developed its own ÖZGÜR modernization program, allowing the country to independently upgrade its fighters to a level approaching the latest F-16 Block 70 Viper standard.
