BAE Systems has begun assembling the first prototype of a next-generation fighter jet, the BAE Tempest.
The relevant photos were shown by BAE Systems during the Farnborough Air Show.
The published photos showed the initial stage of the aircraft assembly, which, according to the company’s plan, should be completed in 2026.
The aircraft design has now been approved by both the company’s experts and the Royal Air Force, and is expected to make its first flight in 2027.
According to the company, production will be significantly accelerated by the extensive use of 3D printing for manufacturing individual parts.
After its first flight in 2027, the aircraft is expected to be used by the Royal Air Force to conduct comprehensive tests to improve the aircraft design and carry out the relevant integration work.
“The demonstrator is helping us to better understand the advanced technology required to build the sixth generation fighter. The progress we have made together – the MoD and industry – in such a short period of time has been amazing. Much of this is down to the next generation of engineers who are using innovative manufacturing solutions to deliver this demonstrator aircraft,” – stated Martin Lowe, Director of the UK MoD Advanced Aircraft Program.
The aircraft is being developed as part of the GCAP (Global Combat Air Program), which also includes Japan and Italy.
The aircraft is currently being assembled at BAE Systems Air’s production site in Warton, Lancashire, where the European Eurofighter Typhoon is also manufactured.
Currently, only BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce are involved in the production, in close cooperation with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Italy’s Leonardo S.p.A.
It is expected that the introduction of the aircraft into the Air Forces of the participating countries will begin in 2035 and will replace Typhoon fighters in the Royal Air Force and Italy, as well as F-2 fighters in the Japanese Air Self-Defense Forces.
Previously, Militarnyi reported that BAE Systems had tested an ejection seat as part of the Tempest fighter jet development project.
