Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SOF) helped to destroy the Russian BUK air defense system in the Zaporizhzhia region.
The representatives of the Special Operations Forces explained that the military of the 3rd Separate Special Purpose Regiment took part in the operation.
During reconnaissance operations in the Zaporizhzhia sector, the regiment’s operators discovered the Russian BUK anti-aircraft missile system.
Afterward, the soldiers provided reconnaissance data and assisted in targeting the invaders with the M142 HIMARS rocket launcher.
“As a result of the strike, the BUK air defense system was destroyed,” the Special Operations Forces noted.
The Russian air defense systems was discovered near the occupied village of Forois in the Zaporizhzhia region.
The system stood in the field on combat duty, but turned out to be incapable of detecting and downing the Ukrainian reconnaissance drone.
One GMLRS rocket used by HIMARS proved sufficient for Ukrainian gunners to destroy the BUK air defense system.
Neutralizing the BUK air defense system will allow Ukrainian drone operators to conduct reconnaissance more safely in this sector.
These Russian SAMs are often hit by various Ukrainian weapon systems.
Recall that on March 12, 2024, the military of the 14th Brigade destroyed the launcher of the Russian BUK anti-aircraft system using a powerful FPV drone.
The Russians are trying to protect elements of the anti-aircraft missile system from drone strikes by installing anti-drone grilles on missiles.
