Sweden will receive new state-of-the-art tank training simulators for Stridsvagn 122 (Leopard 2A5) tanks.
The contract for the supply of simulators was awarded to KNDS, which is managed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Nexter.
The new simulators are to replace the outdated ones in the crew training centers. Deliveries will be made continuously until 2029.
At the same time, the Swedish Armed Forces have not yet disclosed the technical characteristics and number of simulators to be purchased.
According to the report, the new simulators will provide training for the entire tank crew.
The new simulators will also be equipped with a new army command and control system.
Sweden’s Stridsvagn 122 main battle tanks are currently undergoing a large-scale modernization program under a contract signed with KMW on October 23.
This contract is the largest since the purchase of tanks of this type, with 44 combat vehicles expected to undergo deep modernization.
The upgrade includes replacing virtually all electronic components of the tank to ensure the system’s compatibility with other modern Leopard 2s.
In addition, tanks will be equipped with a new L55 gun with the ability to use programmable ammunition, new night sights for the gunner and tank commander, and a night vision camera for a driver and new tracks.
The modernized combat vehicles are to be delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces in 2026. The tanks will receive the Stridsvagn 123A index.
According to open sources, Sweden had about 120 Stridsvagn 122 tanks at the beginning of 2022.
