Russia plans to build six Varshavyanka-class submarines for the Northern Fleet.
This is reported by the Russian propaganda media.
A series of six diesel-electric attack submarines of project 636.3 “Varshavyanka” will be constructed for the Northern Fleet. Submarines will be completed at the Admiralty Shipyards JSC, which already has experience in building this type of boat.
Each boat in the series is planned to receive the names of Ukrainian occupied cities. It is already announced that the first vessel will be named after destroyed by the Russians Mariupol.
According to the publication’s sources, the construction decision has already been made, but the contract has not yet been signed. The contract implementation will not start before 2024.
Admiralty Shipyards JSC is currently completing a series of six “Varshavyankas” for the Russian Pacific Fleet. Construction of the fifth and sixth serial submarines “Mozhaisk” and “Yakutsk” is at the final stage.
Project 636 “Varshavyanka” submarines are a series of Russian multi-purpose diesel-electric submarines designed on the basis of the Soviet Project 877 “Paltus” vessels.
The upgraded Project 636.3 exceeds the original design in terms of power plant capacity, full underwater speed, and range in the mode of operation of diesel engines underwater. Also, these vessels have a much lower level of underwater noise, which affects survivability in combat conditions.
“Varshavyanka” is the main class of non-nuclear submarines of the Russian Navy. They are in service with both the Russian and a number of foreign fleets.
Since 2014, six of these submarines were built for the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation. In 2019, construction of the series of six boats of Project 636.3 for the Pacific Fleet was started, and it is planned to be completed by 2024.
The arsenal of the “Varshavyanka” armament includes six 533mm torpedo tubes with ammunition of 18 torpedoes or 24 naval mines. Also, these boats are carriers of Kalibr-PL cruise missiles upgraded for underwater launch through a torpedo tube.
The crew of the submarine includes 52 sailors, 12 of which are officers. The endurance of submarines is limited to 45 days.
“Varshavyanka” received a strong double hull for a high-depth immersion. The length of the hull is 74 meters, and the width is 10 meters. The submarine is capable of diving 240 meters, and its maximum possible diving depth is 300 meters.
