The first Leopard 2 tanks arrived in Ukraine, and will enter service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
This was announced by Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal.
Mateusz Morawiecki, Polish Prime Minister, has stated in Kyiv that Poland is now transferring four Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, the rest will be a little later.
“A year ago, tanks drove into Ukraine to deprive Ukrainians of freedom. Today, tanks have also entered Ukraine, but in order to protect freedom. The first four Leopard 2 tanks provided by our partners were met by us together with the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki,” Denys Shmyhal stated.
In total, the country pledged to transfer to Ukraine the Leopard 2 tank company – fourteen units.
Shmyhal also congratulated the Ukrainian tank crews, who already have successful battle experience.
“We thank our military for their reliable defense. We are grateful to Poland and all partners for decisive steps that bring Ukraine’s victory closer. With the leadership of the President of Ukraine, we continue to expand the tank coalition in order to return freedom to all Ukrainian territories,” he added.
Training of Ukrainian crews on Leopard 2 has been ongoing for several weeks at the training ground in Sventoshuv.
Recall that in the first half of February, Leopard 2A4 tanks arrived in Poland from Canada, which will be transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Canada will transfer four Leopard 2 main battle tanks from its Armed Forces to Ukraine.
Ukrainian tanks will also receive ammunition from the Netherlands. In the “tank coalition,” the Netherlands is the only state that does not have its own Leopard 2 tanks, but is able to provide ammunition.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that the contribution of the Netherlands is 20,000 ammunition.
