The United States may need more than a year to deliver M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
United States Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth voiced this.
Terms and how they come to the country need to be worked out.
“None of the options that we’re exploring are weeks or two months,” she continued. There are longer timelines involved, but I think there are options that are less than two years, less than a year-and-a-half,” Christine Wormuth said.
Wormuth noted that among the options presented by the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, is the construction of tanks from scratch.
However, as a rule, the army modernizes older tanks instead of building them from scratch.
Another option is to take Abrams from countries that have already purchased them, but it “can spoil relations with important allies.”
According to Wormuth, the Army will present the options to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who will then share them with Biden, who will make the final decision.
Once in January, the United States announced plans to send more than 30 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, officials have warned that their receipt could be long.
And it includes not only the tanks, but also the equipment, such as armored recovery vehicles for tank maintenance, ammunition, and training of the Ukrainian military.
As previously reported, at the end of January, White House national security spokesman John Kirby reported that the delivery of Abrams tanks to Ukraine could take months before they could be on the battlefield.
The United States plans to send to Ukraine the Abrams main battle tanks in the M1A2 configuration.
