During a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Joe Biden will announce the transfer of a new $2 billion aid package to Ukraine.
This assistance package will include the Patriot SAM.
This is stated in the transcript of the press briefing about the upcoming visit of Volodymyr Zelensky published on the White House website.
“President Biden will announce a significant new package of nearly $2 billion of security assistance for Ukraine. It will contain a very important new capability: a Patriot missile battery, which will be a critical asset to defend the Ukrainian people against Russia’s barbaric attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. We will train Ukrainian forces on how to operate the Patriot missile battery in a third country. This will take some time, but Ukrainian troops will take that training back to their country to operate this battery,” a representative of the U.S. presidential administration shared.
When answering a follow-up question, a White House representative noted that the exercises for the Ukrainian military will be held in a third country. After the exercises, the military of the Ukrainian forces, along with weapons, will come back to Ukraine. At the same time, US personnel will not be on the territory of Ukraine.
The White House also emphasized that the United States will continue providing other types of weapons, including NASAMS, HAWK, Stinger MANPADS, and UAV control equipment.
“On the course of this visit, we will also have the opportunity, along with Congress, to mark the work to pass a significant package of additional funding for Ukraine for 2023. And we anticipate a bipartisan package of more than $40 billion of funding for Ukraine,” a Biden administration official added.
The announced package could also include control aerial bombs for JDAM fighters, ammunition for HIMARS, artillery, and mortar shells.
It was previously reported that the United States is discussing the transfer of the Patriot PAC-3, which is capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, to Ukraine.
PAC-3 (Patriot Advanced Capability-3) is the latest and most advanced modernization of American air defense systems of the Patriot class. The system is designed to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, as well as cruise missiles.
The air defense system uses the ERINT (Extended Range Interceptor) highly maneuverable direct-hit anti-missile. The ERINT anti-missile is a single-stage solid fuel projectile made in accordance with the normal aerodynamic scheme with small elongation wings and aerodynamic aileron rudders. Each launcher can accommodate up to 16 ERINT interceptor missiles.
