Ukraine has organized a special camp to hold Russian prisoners of war.

This was announced by the Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Maliuska on air during the national telethon, Suspilne reports.

“We have set up a special camp for prisoners of war in western Ukraine. It holds prisoners of war who could not be exchanged in the near future,” the Minister of Justice said.

Recently captured Russian prisoners of war and those who may be exchanged soon are placed in different locations belonging to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine around the country, Denys Maliuska specified.

He assured that prisoner detention conditions correspond to the norms of the Geneva Convention and are slightly better than those of prisoners or convicts.

POWs are also fully accessible to the Red Cross.

“They (Russian prisoners of war – Ed.) are being contained at the proper level. We do not provide any extra goods to them but in accordance with the international treaty standards we provide them with determined necessities.

Therefore the conditions are slightly better than those a prisoner or a convict would receive: slightly better nutrition, slightly better hygiene products, full access to the Red Cross,” he said.

The cost of Russian POW detention is UAH 3,000 per month per prisoner. It includes food, clothing, hygiene products, and utility bills. It also covers medical equipment, medicine, and staff salaries.

“Russian prisoners of war are, first of all, an exchange fund to free our Ukrainian defenders from enemy captivity,” Maliuska stressed.

Ukraine has stated that it faithfully fulfills all of the international legal obligations towards prisoners of war and demands that Russia also treat the Ukrainian servicemen in a humane manner. This is conveyed in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
